Remind Me When I Arrive: Location Reminders on iPhone, and Making Them Hard to Miss

How to get a reminder when you arrive at or leave a place on iPhone with Apple's Reminders app, why you still miss it, and how to have it call you.

You can get a reminder when you arrive somewhere with the Reminders app that's already on your iPhone, for free: create a reminder, tap the Location button, choose a place, and pick arriving or leaving. That covers most people. The trouble starts when the reminder fires and you ignore the banner, which is a notification like any other.

If that's your problem, FocusCall can call you shortly after you arrive at a place you've set. It's an iPhone app for US and Canadian numbers, and the steps for both approaches are below. Apple's instructions were checked against Apple Support on October 26, 2026, and the other apps' details on their own sites the same day.

How do I set a location reminder on iPhone?

With Apple's Reminders app, based on Apple Support's instructions:

  1. Turn on Location Services. Open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Location Services, and switch it on.
  2. Create a reminder. Open Reminders and tap New Reminder.
  3. Add the place. Tap the Location button. Pick one of the suggested places, or tap Custom to search for your own.
  4. Choose arriving or leaving, and set the size of the area around the place.
  5. Or just ask Siri. Something like "remind me when I get home to check the mail" works. If you add your home and work addresses to your card in Contacts, Siri can use them.

That's the free baseline, and it does the job. Everything below is about what it can't do.

Why do location reminders fail?

They fail in two different ways, and it helps to know which one is yours.

It never fired. The usual suspects: Location Services is off, the app doesn't have permission, Low Power Mode is cutting back background activity, or you're indoors with a poor fix. A radius that's too small makes it worse, because phones locate you approximately. If it keeps missing, delete the location from the reminder and add it again, and check Location Services before anything else. Apple's support forums have long threads from people whose location reminders stopped triggering, so test a new one before you rely on it.

It fired and you didn't act. This is the quieter failure and the more common one for people with ADHD. A banner appears on the lock screen, you're carrying groceries or talking to someone, and a notification costs nothing to ignore. Fixing the trigger won't fix this; you need a stronger signal when it goes off.

What does a location reminder that calls you look like?

In FocusCall you create a reminder and choose "At a place instead" of a time. You search for the place or tap the map, set a radius, and the screen tells you it'll call when you get there. Then iOS watches that area in the background. About a minute after you enter it, your phone rings with a short call that reads the reminder. If you leave the area before that minute is up, the call is cancelled, so driving past doesn't ring you. You answer with a key: 1 done, 2 snooze, 3 tomorrow, 9 cancel, 0 stop all calls. If you don't pick up, Nag Mode rings again.

Some details worth knowing:

FocusCall is on the App Store and starts with a trial, so you can test a few places before you pay. One place reminder uses one call.

How do the options compare?

Apple Reminders FocusCall Other call-reminder apps

"Other call-reminder apps" means Zangy, Jules, ToDoCall and ReminderCall, whose websites and App Store pages we read on October 26, 2026. None of them listed a location trigger. Their calls are time-based or tied to calendars. For two of them, see how they compare in our posts on Zangy and Jules.

What are location reminders good for?

The pattern that works is a short list of "when I get to X, do Y" tasks that you tend to forget:

They're a poor fit for anything with a hard time limit, such as catching a train. That's a time reminder, and probably an earlier one than you think.

Keep the calls rare. Five or six place reminders you actually answer beat twenty you start declining, which is the same logic as the rest of our reminder setup. And FocusCall is a productivity tool, not a medical device, so don't build anything health-critical on a location trigger.

Frequently asked questions

Can an iPhone remind me when I arrive somewhere?

Yes. In the Reminders app, tap the Location button on a reminder, choose a place, and pick arriving or leaving. Location Services must be on under Settings, Privacy & Security. You can also ask Siri to remind you when you get home or when you leave a place.

Why didn't my location reminder go off?

Check that Location Services is on and that Reminders has permission, look at Low Power Mode, and make the radius bigger. If it still fails, remove the location and add it again. Phones locate you approximately, so a very small radius can miss.

Is there an app that calls me when I arrive at a place?

FocusCall does: you pick a place and a radius, and it rings your phone about a minute after you arrive. It's iPhone only and serves US and Canadian phone numbers. In the call-reminder apps we checked (Zangy, Jules, ToDoCall, ReminderCall), we found no place trigger.

Does FocusCall track my location all the time?

FocusCall asks for background location so iOS can tell it when you enter or leave a place you set, and states that your location isn't stored or shared. You can remove a place reminder, or switch off location access in iOS Settings, at any time.

Can I use both a time and a place on one reminder?

No. A reminder is either at a time or at a place. If you need both, create two reminders.

What happens if I miss the call?

Nag Mode rings again. The default is three tries in total, ten minutes apart, and you can change both numbers per reminder. A reminder and its retries count as one call against your plan.
